The Greater Norwich Growth Board is inviting you to take part in a consultation on green spaces in and around Norwich.
Well-designed green spaces are vital to our way of life. They include features that can be natural, like woodland and rivers, or man-made like parks, allotments, hedgerows, playing fields, cycleways, footpaths and even road-side verges.
As an interested party, we value your views on green spaces, their benefits, and how you would like to see them improved. Your views are essential to informing the Greater Norwich Growth Board’s new Green Infrastructure Strategy which will cover the areas of Norwich, Broadland and South Norfolk. The new Green Infrastructure Strategy aims to deliver:
A fresh approach to managing and improving existing green spaces to make sure they benefit as many people as possible, with a focus on inclusive access.
A strategy for creating new green spaces in the area that will benefit people and nature.
The consultation is open for six weeks from 10 May to 21 June.
Everyone who responds to the consultation will be entered into a prize draw to receive an annual family membership pass for the Norfolk Wildlife Trust.
To participate in the survey and be entered into a prize draw to win an annual family membership pass for the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, please visit
Four of our stations have been nominated as the best-loved in the region, as part of this year’s World Cup of Stations, which this year has been deliberately organised to coincide with Community Rail Week. The annual competition, supported by the Rail Delivery Group, is this year being jointly run with the Community Rail Network, to showcase community rail and the benefits the railways bring to residents, the environment, and the local economy. It highlights the best examples of where local partnerships or volunteers have helped improve the station for customers and the local community alike.
In the East, Beccles and Lowestoft, in Suffolk, Southminster, in Essex, and Thetford, in Norfolk, all managed by Greater Anglia, have made it to the East “final” or Group Stage, with the vote held on Monday.
Beccles was nominated for its thriving community-owned café and meeting space in the old station building. The community room is available for rent for or business gatherings, training days, exercise classes, and more. Lowestoft has seen the development of an amazing community hub in the original station building by three local volunteer station adopters (working as the Lowestoft Central group), with the help of the Wherry Lines CRP and the support of Greater Anglia. They have created a multi-purpose room which can be used for exhibitions or meetings and developed a tourism hub and shop. Southminster has become home to the first Men’s Shed in England to be located at a railway station. Thetford has become a wildlife friendly “mecca” due to the remarkable efforts of the local volunteer station adopter team who spend many hours on the station. As well as creating lovely station gardens which received a “Thetford in Bloom” award and a ‘Wildlife Friendly Stations’ accreditation, they have installed bat and swift boxes to help support the populations of these threatened species.
Over 100 nominations were whittled down to 48 by TV presenter Tim Dunn, covering four from each of 11 regions, plus Tim’s four bonus stations selection. The winning station from the East will go through to a semi-final on 25 May against the winners of the South East, South West and London heats. Winners of next Thursday’s votes go through to a final next Friday (26 May) when this year’s winner will be crowned the UK’s best-loved station.
You can vote for your favourite from the four nominated East stations – Beccles, Lowestoft, Southminster or Thetford on Monday 22 May on Twitter via #WorldCupofStations or @RailDeliveryGrp.

New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership has launched a call for innovative projects which support growth across Norfolk and Suffolk.
The £1.5million Innovative Projects Fund invites submissions from new revenue projects which help to deliver the ambitions of the Economic Strategy and Local Industrial Strategy.
Successful projects will have the potential to support the delivery plan for the Economic Strategy for Norfolk and Suffolk on the themes of driving inclusion and skills, our offer to the world, driving business growth and productivity, collaborating to grow and competitive clusters close to global centres.
The first call of the Innovative Projects Fund was made in October 2018. Schemes awarded funding in that round include Growing the Year Round Economy (led by Visit East of England), a schedule of events on the newly-refurbished Ipswich Corn Hill and work to support the international positioning of Great Yarmouth’s energy sector.
This Innovative Projects Fund call brings together £500,000 from income from the business rates generated by New Anglia LEP’s Enterprise Zones, £500,000 of pooled business rates from Norfolk local authorities and £500,000 of pooled business rates from Suffolk local authorities.
Chris Starkie, Chief Executive of New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for projects to bid for revenue funding to deliver new exciting projects which help to deliver economic growth. We are delighted that local authorities are matching our investment into the Fund through pooled business rates.
“The first initiatives to be supported by the Innovative Projects Fund a year ago are already delivering outputs and making a difference so we’re keen for more ambitious schemes to come forward and bid for funding this time.
“Delivering on the ambitions in the Economic Strategy is key to everything we do and this fund gives ideas which push the boundaries the chance to start making a difference.”
Interested organisations should contact tanya.nelson@newanglia.co.uk for more information and to request an application form.
The final deadline for applications is Friday 20 December 2019.
Project appraisals will take place in January and February 2020, with the announcement of successful projects anticipated to take place in spring 2020.
Projects must:
Represent new innovative activity;
Be able to demonstrate their contribution to the delivery of both the Economic Strategy and where applicable the Local Industrial Strategy through direct and indirect outputs;
Wholly benefit Norfolk or Suffolk residents or businesses;
Be State Aid compliant;
Be able to demonstrate the need for funding and the additionality achieved by the funding;
Plug a funding gap that cannot be met by other grant programmes;
Be for revenue funding only, although purchase of small plant, equipment etc could be admissible;
Match funding up to 50% would be an advantage, this can be match funding in kind (e.g., staff time) but must be for new activity (existing staff positions working on the new project must be backfilled);
Support inclusive growth.
The region’s ambitions for future growth are set out in the Economic Strategy for Norfolk and Suffolk for the period 2017 to 2036. The Local Industrial Strategy builds on the priorities and targets set by local partners in the Norfolk and Suffolk Economic Strategy and is a local blueprint for inclusive growth and productivity gains, with an overall goal to transform the economy into one of the best places in the world to live, learn, work and succeed in business.
I thought you’d like to know that Microsoft and the Guardian have joined the NorDevCon2016 line up!
Building applications using the Universal Windows Platform (Friday) Paul Foster (Microsoft)
Windows 10 introduces the Universal Windows Platform (UWP), which further evolves the Windows Runtime model and brings it into the Windows 10 unified core. As part of the core, the UWP now provides a common app platform available on every device that runs Windows 10. With this evolution, apps that target the UWP can call not only the WinRT APIs that are common to all devices, but also APIs (including Win32 and .NET APIs) that are specific to the device family the app is running on. The UWP provides a guaranteed core API layer across devices. In this demo rich session, we will have some fun exploring how to build an application to run across several device families.

Before: Previous reception layout
Brief
To provide a functional and attractive piece of furniture for a reception area in a busy client facing position in a very modern and well-designed residential care facility. Lydia Eva Court is a modern, purpose-built home care home in Gorleston, near the East Norfolk coast. The home provides excellent residential care for up to 89 people in six separate areas and specialises for those living with dementia. The furniture needs to provide a focal point for visitors., the client requires a meet and greet area for the building, also a comfortable workspace for an admin function. The furniture needs to be resistant to cleaning chemicals and finished in finishes complementary to the building design and decor.
Solution
Fitting the limited space perfectly, in proposing Tera reception furniture iQ Workspace fulfilled the brief with a solid looking range finished in high pressure laminates in a range of colours which perfectly suited the client decor and construction modules that provides a generous workspace for staff. Best of all, as a non-bespoke solution, it offers excellent value for money.

Our next breakfast will be held on March 23rd 2016 at the Maids Head Hotel in the Oak Room at a cost of £11.00pp and you can book a place here
Below is a review of the last breakfast we held:
Breakfast with James Duez: Imagining a World with Unlimited Computing
Norfolk Developers held their held their final breakfast of 2015 at the Maids Head Hotel on 16th December at the Maids Head Hotel and despite the early start drew a good crowd of techies and non-techies alike. James Duez was the morning’s speaker, tackling the epic subject of a world with unlimited computing over a full English.
Essentially in James’ world of super fast, super economical super-computers, everything would be better.
Healthcare could be revolutionized, bioinformatic searches carried out in the blink of an eye and weather forecasting would be, well, accurate. There are just two things standing in the way. The cost of producing these computers and then the energy they require to function. James’ company Optalysys is in the process of creating an optical processor, with the aim of significantly reducing the build cost and the running cost of super fast computers, and they are two years away from their goal. Using high grade liquid crystal and optical lasers he predicts they will be able to perform a multitude of functions in a fraction of the time it currently takes, impacting on just about every possible area of life.Optalysys are already working withthe Genome Project in Norwich and theEuropean Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts.
Among all the highly technical, almost futuristic, talk, I discovered a new favourite word. ‘Petaflop’ is a measurement of computer processing speed, but in my mind it’s the next generation of Pokemon. Don’t even get me started on Gigaflop….

Chadwicks are hosting a Business Leaders event that may be of interest. We will be looking at the steps a business can take in the years leading to an exit to increase the chances of success.
Whether the business is to be passed on to the next family generation, the management team or to a new owner completely it is vital as little value as possible is lost in the transfer. We will consider where the value really sits in a business, how this can be enhanced, where it is vulnerable and how it can be better protected.
A well-executed plan, even if it seems too far in advance will ensure that the business can continue to thrive and grow and your investment of time and resources will continue to deliver long-term benefits for everyone involved.
