As the final chapter of our 80 Years in the Making exhibition closes, we are overwhelmed by the warmth, enthusiasm, and community spirit that filled The Forum from August 4th to 7th.
Dan Skipper, Age UK Norwich CEO said: “What a celebration, not just marking 80 years of Age UK Norwich – but a powerful story of a partnerships with the city. Norfolk has one of the oldest demographic profiles in the country – therefore our response must be proportionate to the scale of that challenge. I hope our exhibition helped people imagine Norwich as a national leader in positive, healthy ageing – that is the future we want to build. By investing in Age UK Norwich, and by partnering with us, you will be driving real change – for older people, for families, and for the city and county.”
From a packed and enthusiastic launch to a week of meaningful conversation and heartfelt connection, the response has been nothing short of inspiring.
We extend our deepest gratitude to:
Aviva, Home Instead Norwich, and Hatch Brenner Solicitors, whose generous sponsorship underpinned the entire event and enabled us to think big.
Image Experiential and CIM Signs, whose creative design and execution brought the exhibition to life, transforming archives and stories into an immersive experience.
The Forum, for hosting us in such a welcoming and vibrant space.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to our exceptional speakers and partners, whose contributions shaped the week’s energy and impact: Age UK (both the national team and CEO Paul Farmer); GaitSmart; Centre for Ageing Better; Home Instead Norwich; Dragon Hall Society; Barclays; Konnect Bus; John Gordon‑Saker and the History of Brands; Reflex Theatre; and Hatch Brenner, as well as former CEO Brenda Arthur your voices and perspectives were integral to the conversation.
To all local change‑makers, volunteers, advocates, and community members who joined us on opening day and throughout the week: thank you.
You reaffirmed that in Norwich, local doesn’t mean small it means bold.
Our exhibition began with a powerful launch, a full house and an engaged audience set the tone for a week that combined nostalgia with forward thinking. Visitors explored archive photographs, loved ones’ stories, and the evolution of Age UK Norwich since our founding in 1945.They took part in talks, digital inclusion sessions, health advice, Age Friendly Norwich feedback, and more — experiences that served both to educate and empower.
The reach extended online too: social media posts and community shares amplified the exhibition’s stories far beyond The Forum’s walls. Yet, what remains most powerful is the simple magic of face‑to‑face moments, conversations across generations, tears of recognition, and new friendships formed.
Continuing the Journey
While the exhibition has ended, our mission continues. We remain dedicated to our £80,000 fundraising goal, now more driven than ever by the momentum and connections forged during the week.
Age UK Norwich has long stood against loneliness, championing lunch clubs, befriending, advice services, and advocacy as core pillars of our work — and this exhibition was a bold affirmation of our city’s age‑friendly model of living well later in life.
Thank you, Norwich, for celebrating with us, reflecting with us, and laying the foundation for the next 80 years of care, dignity, and community.

Independent, East-Anglian accountancy firm Aston Shaw has announced the purchase of King’s Lynn firm, Burrells. Burrells was first established in 1992 and since then it has gone on to build an enviable reputation in the area.
The acquisition of Burrells is the next step in Aston Shaw’s ambitious growth strategy, claiming it will enable them to grow their King’s Lynn team and be better resourced overall as a firm, ultimately improving the level of service provided to clients.
Burrells has built its considerable reputation primarily through its specialist tax advisory services. The acquisition means that Aston Shaw will incorporate this expertise into their own service offering, giving the firm a further edge over its competitors.
Dominic Shaw, Director of Aston Shaw said: “As a firm, we have only recently started to branch out into West Norfolk, having acquired the equally well-reputed King’s Lynn firm, Kirby & Haslam back in April 2018. Since then, our broad range of services and straight-talking approach to tax and accountancy has proven popular with the local business community.”
“For us to continue to deliver a consistent level of excellence, we need to ensure that we have the capacity and resources to do so; we’re confident the purchase of Burrells will allow us to continue to cater to the needs of West Norfolk businesses.”
Burrells Director, Stephen Burrell, will be joining Aston Shaw as a result of the acquisition. Stephen has been working as a Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA) for more than 50 years.
Aston Shaw Director, Mark Noakes, said: “Stephen brings with him a wealth of experience that will no doubt benefit many of our clients both in King’s Lynn and our other office locations. I look forward to welcoming Stephen and his team to the firm.”
All staff from Burrells will move to Aston Shaw’s newly renovated office on King Street.

A multidisciplinary team from Ashtons Legal have recently assisted leading Suffolk insurance broker, Ryan Insurance (Ryan’s), and their Chairman Tim Ryan in the sale of the business to London-based insurance and risk management business, Seventeen Group.
Ryan Insurance was formed in 1975 and as a UK top 100 broker handles over £12m of both personal and business insurance premiums. They employ over 50 staff at Crane House on Ipswich’s main route into the town, London Road.
Ryan’s will form part of James Hallam, Seventeen Group’s broking subsidiary and will continue to trade under the Ryan’s brand. Tim Ryan will now focus on his other interests with Directors Robin Belsom and Tim Larke remaining to lead the business.
Advising on the sale was Paul Whittingham, Craig Fiddaman and Faye Power from Ashtons’ Corporate and Commercial Team. They were ably assisted by Simon Burnip in Commercial Property and Colin Makin and Emily Dixon from the firm’s Employment Law Team.
Paul Whittingham said: “Ryan Insurance is a well respected Suffolk business which has just moved into its next phase with the sale to Seventeen Group. We really enjoyed working with Tim and his team to help bring this about and wish the business every success in the future.”
Tim Ryan adds: “From the beginning of the sales process, it was important for the shareholders to have good quality advice that helped us understand the contractual elements of the deal. Ashtons put a team together that managed our expectations well and simplified the language so we could make key decisions. All in all, they made the sale a more pleasant and manageable experience.”
