As Britain’s heatwave continues across the county, businesses from across Norfolk, and even some from Cambridgeshire, came together for a networking breakfast at Knights Hill Hotel in King’s Lynn.
Delegates arrived early to enjoy the early morning sun and to make new connections. Not only was the room filled with Norfolk business, but our friends at Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce brought some delegates along to meet businesses across the border.
Welcomed by our West Norfolk Chamber President Michael Baldwin of Bank House Hotel, attendees started the event by taking part in our networking activity, in which they had to identify global cities by their ‘Street Map’ view. One table came close to full marks with 8 out of a possible 10.
Following this was breakfast served by Knights Hill Hotel, where delegates were able to continue conversations whilst tucking in. Once the plates were cleared we mixed the room up in our classic ‘Safari Network’ where attendees move tables to meet more businesses.
Next came our guest speakers. Elizabeth kicked things off giving an overview of how successful tourism has been in West Norfolk in recent years. This is shown by the fact that 18% of employment in West Norfolk supports tourism, and this percentage rises during peak seasons. Elizabeth also gave an overview of the new mobile apps in West Norfolk, including the ‘Visit West Norfolk‘ app which she encouraged businesses to get involved in.
After Elizabeth’s talk was Kate who kindly gave us her time despite being so close to the King’s Lynn Festival. Kate highlighted how the King’s Lynn Festival is one of the longest running art festivals in the UK. The festival takes place in venues across King’s Lynn including St.George’s Guildhall, which is the largest and best preserved medieval guildhall’s in the UK.
After some great question and answer time with businesses focusing on how they could get involved with the King’s Lynn Festival and the Council’s apps, the event drew to a close with the networking continuing.
I would like to share my story… I am the founder of Globally Onward, a not-for-profit organisation based in Norwich, which supports and empowers highly skilled immigrants and refugees to restart their careers here in the UK. We also exist to encourage businesses to value diversity and inclusion, and we aim to become an organisation that can bring employers and professional immigrants and refugees together to meet each other’s needs. In the initial phase we will be concentrating most of our effort on East Anglia and we are interested in working with local employers for talent acquisition, get in touch with us at info@globallyonward.org

New rules were introduced on 6 October 2021 as part of the UK’s implementation of the Fifth Money Laundering Directive (5MLD) extending the scope of the trust register.
Previously, trusts were only required to register if they were liable to pay tax. Under the new rules all UK trusts are required to register unless they come under specific exemptions.
Trusts that need to be registered
Trusts that need to register under 5MLD fall into three broad categories.
1. All UK express trusts unless specifically excluded
An express trust is one that is created deliberately by the settlor in express terms and usually in writing, as distinguished from one that comes in to being through the operation of the law, such as trusts set up under intestacy laws or personal injury trusts receiving funds under court order.
2. Trusts that have a UK tax liability
Irrespective of whether they are express or specifically excluded. In other words, any trust with a UK tax liability needs to register.
3. Non-UK express trusts that
– Acquire land or property in the UK; or
– Have at least one UK resident trustee and have a business relationship within the UK (such as having a UK accountant or adviser).
Common arrangements that will now need to be registered
Declarations of trust over land (unless the trustees are holding exclusively for themselves);
Investment bonds written in trust (as part of Inheritance Tax Planning for example);
Bare trusts; and
Non-complex estates under administration for more than two years.
Registration deadlines
The deadline for new registrations of existing non-taxable trusts under 5MLD is 1 September 2022.
Non-taxable trusts set up after 1 September 2022 must register within 90 days of creation.
Trusts that need to register under the existing rules because they have a UK income tax or Capital Gains Tax liability for the first time, must do so by 5 October following the end of the tax year in which the liability arose. This is to allow time for a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) to be issued under which to file the self assessment tax return.
Trusts that already have a UTR need to register by 31 January following the tax year in which the liability to income tax or Capital Gains Tax arose (the same deadline as for the corresponding tax return).
Trusts that have other tax liabilities that are not income tax or Capital Gains Tax that is Inheritance Tax, Stamp Duty Land Tax (and the Scottish and Welsh equivalents) and Stamp Duty Reserve Tax, must also register by 31 January in the tax year following that in which the liability arose.
Updates to Registered trusts
Currently, registered taxable trusts are required to update the trust register within 30 days of any change in details relating to the registered persons.
The Government is intending to legislate to increase this period to 90 days later this year.

Aiming to drive significant trade and inward investment for the UK, DIT will use the Expo to highlight a number of key sectors, including infrastructure and finance, technology, healthcare, consumer goods, catering and food and drink.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued new guidance for any business who makes environmental claims.
The guidance is applicable for goods and services and for any business.
The purpose of this guidance is to help businesses understand and comply with their existing obligations under consumer protection law when making environmental claims. We hope it will give confidence to those businesses whose products are genuinely ‘green’ to provide consumers with the information they need to make informed decisions.
Following the re-launch of the Norfolk Chamber in West Norfolk, we are now seeking to appoint new members to become part of the West Norfolk Chamber Council.
The West Norfolk Chamber Council will consist of a cross-section of the local business community and aims to represent the main business sectors within the local area, particularly key sectors such as manufacturing, professional services and IT/Digital companies.
One of the roles of the West Norfolk Chamber Council is to promote the views of the local businesses in the area, both to the Norfolk Chamber Main Board and to other local stakeholders, such as the Borough Council of King’s Lynn & West Norfolk, Norfolk County Council and both LEPs. Regular meetings are also held with the local MPs, to ensure the West Norfolk business voice is carried to Westminster.
As a member of the West Norfolk Chamber Council, you would have the opportunity to make a difference to West Norfolk and ensure your views and those of your counterparts are heard.
