Commenting on the trade figures for December 2011, David Kern, Chief Economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:
“The figures for December show a large narrowing in the trade deficit to its smallest level since April 2003. While we should not give too much weight to one month’s figures, this is still a welcome development and supports our view that a recession is unlikely. Although the re-balancing of the economy towards exports is moving slowly, it is reassuring that we are heading in the right direction.
“Given the problems facing the world economy and the ongoing debt crisis in the eurozone, British exporters will face a challenge to keep their positions in international markets. As the government perseveres with measures to reduce the deficit, it is clear that exports will be one of the main engines of our recovery. We now need to see a powerful national export drive with more support for businesses in areas such as trade finance, insurance and promotion.
“While low interest rates and a competitive pound will help, more must be done to ensure that British firms can compete on equitable terms. On their part, British exporters must reinforce their efforts to break into faster growing economies such as India, China and Brazil.”

Following a brief name change in 2019 to The Boudicca, the hotel is proudly returning to its roots and reverting back to its original name of Caistor Hall; a decision influenced by the strength of the brand within the local community over the years.
Commenting ahead of the MPC decision tomorrow (Thursday), David Kern, Chief Economist at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:
“The financial markets are almost unanimous in expecting no change at the MPC meeting, with interest rates being kept at 0.5% and the Quantitative Easing (QE) programme at £325bn. However, two committee members voted at the last meeting for an increase in QE to £350bn, and we’ll be interested to see whether support for such a move would gather momentum. Although we have supported previous increases in QE, we feel that a further £25bn would be unnecessary as it would only have a marginal effect. There is ample liquidity in the financial system and there is no need to drive down yields on government bonds further.
“The main aim should be supporting real economic growth, by encouraging increased lending to viable businesses and making the new credit easing scheme more substantial. But the MPC should also reconsider its reluctance to include assets other than gilts, such as securitised SME loans, in the QE programme. This will make the banks less risk averse, and will help improve the flow of lending to credit-worthy firms.”

Our festive networking breakfasts have always proved popular in the past, so hopefully this year everyone can join in and visit a breakfast as near to their business as possible!
It’s our usual Business Breakfasts – with a pinch of festive fun thrown into the mix. Keeping with tradition, we have asked our event featured charities to host the events and introduce the selection of exciting, Christmas themed networking activities aimed at helping delegates get to know each other a little better. The featured charities for our Christmas Breakfasts 2017 are:

A series of free business roadshows will offer advice and funding support to SMEs across Norfolk and Suffolk this autumn.
The New Anglia Growth Hub is hosting the short sessions to give companies the opportunity to find out about funding and financial support and to speak to the Growth Hub’s business advisers for impartial advice.
New Anglia Growth Hub Manager Nigel Best said: “These free roadshows are a great opportunity for business owners to come and find out more about the support that’s available to help them grow.
“Our business advisers have given over 30,000 hours of free support to businesses across Norfolk and Suffolk over the past three years but we know that there are firms looking for help and information.
“I’d encourage any business to drop in to one of the sessions and find out more about the support available.”
The free Norfolk roadshows will be held on the following dates:
Business Shaper Group and New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) have announced the launch of 50 major new Business Roadshows, across Norfolk and Suffolk, from April – November, to benefit hundreds of companies, accessing grants and funding to help them grow.
The Roadshow takes place in Bury St Edmunds at the Clarice House at 4pm until 7pm, and will help to highlight the wealth of grants, funding opportunities, free business support and training available to business owners as they prepare their organisations for the future.
“For a young business like AT Power, finding the right advice, support and funding to grow is difficult. Attending the Business Roadshow in December last year, we were able to understand all the different types of funding options, grants and support available to small businesses. We accessed a £3000 grant from the Manufacturing Advisory Service, which has helped us increase turnover by over by £75,000 in two months. We also have pipeline of business in excess of £600,000, all with the help and guidance of Business Shaper Group. I would strongly advise any business looking to grow in 2014, to attend the Business Roadshow”, said Andy Clifton managing director of AT Power.
Commenting on the preliminary UK GDP figures for Q3 2017, published earlier this week by the ONS, Suren Thiru, Head of Economics at the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), said:
“While GDP growth in Q3 was a slight uptick on the previous quarter, the UK’s combined economic growth performance over the first nine months of 2017 was still the weakest since late 2012, and indicates that the UK economy remains locked onto a low growth trajectory.
“The manufacturing sector was a bright spot for the UK economy in Q3, with output picking-up in the quarter. The construction sector remains an area of concern with confirmation that it has once again slipped back into recession. However, its percentage contribution to GDP means its impact on overall growth in the quarter was limited.
“While the services sector was the largest contributor to GDP growth in Q3, the latest data confirms that activity in the sector remains muted, with growth unchanged from the previous quarter. BCC’s own Quarterly Economic Survey confirms that the sector remains under pressure with almost all services indicators below their pre-EU referendum levels, particularly for consumer-focused businesses.
“With the latest GDP data confirming that the UK economy is still in a challenging period, these figures are likely to weigh on whether the MPC will raise interest rates next month. We would urge the MPC to proceed with caution on raising rates, as tightening monetary policy amid the current economic and political uncertainty could weaken growth. Crucially, the focus of next month’s budget must be on supporting business growth, including addressing the escalating burden of up-front business costs.”
